origin of phrase "contemplate/ponder your navel"

I've done some searching and found lots of usage, but found no origins for this curious phrase. Any ideas? Thanks.

I believe it comes from the imagery of a half-naked Indian guru meditating on a mountaintop. To the casual and cynical observer it would appear that he is staring at his navel.The OED2 records D.H....

I do not have access to the OED at the moment, but I recall a word "omphaloskepsis" [omphalos, belly button + skepsis, looking] for the act of contemplating the navel.

And also omphaloscopy, although this sounds like a medical procedure, so I prefer the other. Both are only cited in the 20th century, at least in English, and I suspect they are modern coinages.I seem...
